The sudden silence pressed hard against his eardrums, heavy and suffocating. Ray stared at the waveforms dancing violently across the screen. They mimicked a human thumbprint, but woven from threads of pure, shifting gold light. — Ray? Can you hear me? He froze. The air died in his lungs. The voice didn't come from the shattered speakers. It vibrated from within the copper heating pipes, deep inside the walls. A warm, gravelly rasp. A voice he knew from a childhood that ended in fire. — Dad? Ray whispered the word, pressing his cheek against the freezing metal of the bulkhead. No answer. No repeat.…
